How to Use Your Alexa Device as an Intercom

One of the most underrated features of Amazon Alexa devices (in my opinion) is the intercom/calling drop-in feature. You can call other rooms in your house, call home when you're away, or call a friend or family member right from your Alexa device....or even from your Alexa app on your phone! Here's how to set it up:

Name Your Echo Devices. You could keep the default names for your Echo Devices, but they default to something like, "April's 2nd Echo Dot".....so it can be hard to remember which device is in which location. To rename your devices to something more useful:

  • Launch the Alexa App on your phone
  • Tap the device icon in the lower right corner (it looks like a little house)
  • Tap the "Echo & Alexa" box toward the top of the screen
  • Select each one of your devices individually
  • Click "Edit Name" and change the name to something more useful, like "Master Bedroom Echo Dot"

Enable Drop-In for your Household. This can include people physically in your household, or anyone that you share Prime benefits with. This is also useful if you have Alexa devices in two physical locations....like home & the garage, your office, or a vacation home. To enable Drop-In:

  • Launch the Alexa App on your phone
  • Tap the conversation bubble at the bottom of your screen
  • Tap the "Drop In" icon at the top
  • If you haven't used this feature before, you'll see a pop-up notification that says, "Enable Drop In". Click "Settings". This will take you to your Alexa Profile.
  • Click the "Allow Drop In" switch to the ON position.
  • You'll see another pop-up notification that says "Enable Drop In?". Click OK.

Enable Household Drop In on Each Device. Depending on if you've used this feature in the past, you may have inadvertently disabled Drop In on individual devices. To make sure that all the devices are set up correctly, follow these steps:

  • Launch the Alexa App on your phone
  • Tap the device icon in the lower right corner (it looks like a little house)
  • Tap the "Echo & Alexa" box toward the top of the screen
  • Select each one of your devices individually
  • Click on "Communications" in the General Section
  • Confirm that "Drop In" shows "On" or "My Household"...depending on your preference. If the check mark is next to "Off", then click one of the other two options.

That's it! Now you are ready to Drop In! Just say, "Alexa, drop in on the Living Room" or wherever you've got your Alexa device set up. It will happen automatically, and the person on the other end will hear three chimes before the call is connected.

To use the intercom feature from the Alexa App:

  • Click on the Conversation bubble at the bottom of the screen
  • Click on the Drop In icon at the top of your screen
  • Choose which device to drop in on

That's all there is to it! This feature is perfect for letting the family know dinner is ready, for checking on the kids while you're at work, or feeling safer about an elderly relative living alone.
